Kaizer Chiefs legend Itumeleng Khune has advised PSL players to be wary of agents as they deal with them through the course of their careers.
Khune says some agents do not have the interest of players at heart and are there to profit from their sweat in the guise of helping them.
The Chiefs legend shared his own story about how he lost so much money to agents during his 25-year stay with the Glamour Boys, regretting that he only learnt of it very late.
“I think learning about finances is very important because, as footballers, we tend to think that we have agents,” Khune said at the Nedbank Cup gala dinner in Durban, as quoted by FARPost.
Khune slams football agents

“I don’t mean to downgrade the agents or talk bad, but towards the end of my career, I stopped having an agent, and I started seeing growth in my bank account. When I was still under an agency, I thought they were doing the job, but all they did was to come and sign a three-year contract with the team, and you sign a two-year contract with them.”
Khune went on about how agents wasted his time and money, revealing some of the tactics used, while warning current players about them.
“So they get their share of money, and they forget completely about you because you’re not their only player. They would rather have five different goalkeepers, playing for different teams,” he went on.
What tactics do they use?

“And when a club approaches an agent and says we need a goalkeeper, he has to choose from the five as to which one he is taking.
“So I feel like agents have wasted my time, and if I knew that at a young age, I would be far by now. Players always run to agents for advice, yet agents only think of their pockets.”
Khune, who started out as a striker when he first arrived at Chiefs in 1999, before successfully transitioning into a goalkeeper, made 347 appearances in all competitions, winning 12 trophies, including three league titles.
The 37-year-old made 91 Bafana Bafana appearances from 2008-2020, and even captained the side, representing his country at the 2010 World Cup, 2013 Africa Cup of Nations as well as the 2016 Rio Olympics.
