Mamelodi Sundowns' Lucas Ribeiro Costa has surprised football enthusiasts by revealing his footballing idol, who isn't a fellow Brazilian.
A country synonymous with football excellence, Brazil, is Ribeiro's birthplace. With a record number of FIFA World Cup triumphs, Brazil has consistently produced some of the world's greatest players.
The left-footer, Costa has been lauded as the current best player in the Betway Premiership, consistently delivering stellar performances.
Despite his admiration for Neymar, Ribeiro is more drawn to Messi's unique playing style. Messi's freedom on the pitch and exceptional left foot have captivated Ribeiro.
LUCAS RIBEIRO – ‘MY IDOL IS NOT BRAZILIAN’
“Well, if I look at the Brazilian players; I grew up watching mostly Neymar, it’s one player that demonstrates freedom and creativity,” he told iDiski Times.
“You see what he does on the pitch, Joga Bonito, yes. So it’s marvellous to watch and you would know Neymar influenced any Brazilians.
“But in my game, in particular, my idol – is not Brazilian but [Lionel] Messi. Every time I watch Messi and what he does on the pitch, it’s who I model my game on. I want to be like him and do the same things Messi did.”
