Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Patrick Mayo is not convinced Yusuf Maart has what it takes to captain the club.
The midfielder took over the role ahead of the 2024/25 Premier Soccer League campaign upon the arrival of coach Nasreddine Nabi. While at Sekhukhune United, Maart proved his leadership skills consistently and was even part of the Bafana Bafana squad in the 2021/22 edition.
However, the midfielder has been struggling to deliver as expected for the Glamour Boys thanks to his inconsistencies. In the ongoing campaign, he has played 20 games across all competitions with a goal and three assists to his name.
Mayo believes Maart has failed to show his leading credentials at Chiefs suggesting a change should be considered.
‘Some people don't have leadership qualities in their blood' – Mayo

“For me, Yusuf Maart is not mentally strong to be a captain. Look at the calibre of captains that have been at Chiefs in the past,” he told Far Post.
“There were the likes of Patrick Mabhedi, Cyril Nzama, and Itumeleng Khune; the list goes on. They had strong characters on and off the field. Maart is not at that level. As a captain, you should be consistent in your performances. With Maart, he can give you a good performance, but then next game, he’s quiet.
“I think some people don’t have leadership qualities in their blood. They are given the captain’s armband because they are wonderful players and hard workers.”
Maart's contract with Chiefs expires in June 2025, and it is interesting to see whether the club will extend his stay.
