Sundowns closing in on key transfer

Mamelodi Sundowns are being tipped as favourites to land highly rated teenage midfielder Khulekani Nxumalo, according to KickOff.

The 19-year-old, who plies his trade at British Academy in KwaZulu-Natal, has been on the radar of several Betway Premiership sides after a breakthrough campaign that also caught the eye of clubs in England.

Nxumalo, known as “Sdah” in KZN football circles, earned a trial with Manchester City’s Under-21 side towards the end of last season after being recommended by club legend Yaya Toure, whose brother Kolo previously worked as an assistant to Pep Guardiola at the Etihad. He also had the chance to trial with Queens Park Rangers before returning home.

KickOff reports that Sundowns had been the front runners for Nxumalo’s signature before Manchester City and QPR entered the picture, with British Academy said to have given the two English clubs first refusal on any move. AmaZulu and Durban City are also credited with an interest, but Masandawana are understood to remain the leading suitors domestically for the attacking midfielder.

Cardoso confirms Ndlovu injury setback

Meanwhile, Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has shed light on the fitness of summer signing Siyanda Ndlovu, revealing that the midfielder had been carrying an injury heading into the new season.

Ndlovu joined Sundowns from Golden Arrows during the off-season, but Cardoso disclosed that the issue kept the new arrival out of training during pre-season.

According to Soccer Laduma, Cardoso confirmed that Ndlovu did not train with the squad throughout pre-season because of the knock, as reported by Dailysports.

The update comes on the back of a hectic run for Sundowns, who opened their 2026/27 campaign with a 3-2 win over Polokwane City in the MTN8 quarter-final, and follows a week in which Cardoso has also had to address the futures of Monnapule Saleng and Thapelo Maseko.
