Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has praised Cassius Mailula’s impressive start to his second spell with the club.

The Sundowns development product left Masandawana in 2023 to join MLS side Toronto FC. However, he struggled for regular game time in Canada before moving to Wydad Casablanca on loan.

Mailula later joined Belgian side KV Kortrijk on another loan spell, but again found playing opportunities limited. The 24-year-old has now returned to Sundowns during the current transfer window and has wasted little time making an impact. ‘

He has scored three goals in four appearances across all competitions, finding the net three times in the Betway Premiership and once in the MTN8.

“Cassius is a stated player; everybody knows the quality that he has. Obviously, that being happy makes him, makes things more fluid,” Cardoso stated.

“He’s a very happy player in the moment by being with us; we are very happy also to have him. He was very well welcomed, but he felt immediately back home, and when you are happy, usually things flow towards you, you know, the energy comes towards the people that are open-hearted to it. 

“So, I think that’s what’s happening, and let’s see. Of course, we have a lot of players that can help in the front; he’s one of them, and we count on him,m of course, as we count on the other ones.”

Cardoso tipped to deliver

Former Mamelodi Sundowns defender Wayne Arendse is confident that coach Miguel Cardoso will turn things around soon at the African champions.

Despite being third on the log table, Sundowns has been unconvincing in some matches so far this season as Cardoso is still experimenting with new combinations.

A section of the club’s supporters blames the frequent changes in the starting lineup for the inconsistent performances.

“It’s too early to press the panic button; things will improve,” shares Arendse, speaking to KickOff.

“I understand where Cardoso is coming from because you are working with a squad of players, including those who participated in the World Cup, and at the same time, you want to give them opportunities.

“Otherwise, when are you going to give them a chance? In what game? It’s the right move that he made on Sunday against Sekhukhune United to see clearly the depth of his team.

“It’s normal for any coach to include players who haven’t played often. Cardoso is likely reviewing his options, ticking off names of those who can help the team this season.
