Sundowns news as they break
Cardoso on Sundowns’ dragon
Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has opened up on Mothobi Mvala’s long return from injury after his impressive run in the side’s Carling Knockout Cup win over Golden Arrows on Tuesday.
Mvala played 90 minutes, his second full game this term as Iqraam Rayners’ sole goal ensured passage for Sundowns to the semi-final of the league cup.
This was the 32 year old’s fifth game overall this season across all competitions after he recovered from a long term injury that saw him miss the majority of the previous campaign where he also lost his place in the senior national team.
“I think Mothobi proved to everybody that he is in his level. I remember that I saw him getting injured. He got injured when he played away in Raja Casablanca for the Champions League,” he told he media.
I was watching that match on the stands because after that match, I came in the club, as you remember. Since then, that was a hard, hard, process and as you remember, also he got a setback, a strong setback when we played Arrows away. And it was a long way for him.
“But do you know what is his name in the locker room? His name is ‘the dragon‘, and that comes also from exactly his mentality. He’s a very strong human being, very strong player, of course.

“And just due to the love that we in the club give to all our players, especially the ones that are injured or on injured processes, and due to the work, of course, that he did himself by giving a lot of effort to his recovery, and the work that was done by the medical department was able to bring him to the level where he is now.
“In football, moments appear like that when Grant [Kekana] got injured, when Keegan [Johannes] got injured, of course more opportunities came for Mothobi. Mothobi is a strong player. He never gives up. He was waiting his moment. He knows that in Sundowns it’s like that. There’s a moment that will appear. It can take one month, two months, three months, but it will appear,” Cardoso added.
Allende’s Sundowns future explained
Marcelo Allende is the type of player Mamelodi Sundowns don’t want to easily lose, and coach Miguel Cardoso has confirmed that they will make an effort to keep the South American midfield maestro.
Currently in the last season of his contract with Sundowns, Allende looks set to leave as a free agent at the end of the campaign, after joining the club in August 2022. Blessed with an incredible engine, the 27-year-old has been a consistent feature and performer in the Sundowns line-up throughout this period at Chloorkop, usually covering over 10 kilometres in matches while making the team play with his passes.
If it were up to Cardoso, and everyone else at Sundowns, the Chilean would probably already have a new contract, but the ball is in the player’s court, so the club has to wait and see if he wants to carry on beyond the end of this campaign.
“He is so consistent and he has been doing it for so many years. We are going to do our best, I am pretty sure, to keep him with us for a long time. It’s a pleasure to see him training, it’s a pleasure to see him playing,” he opened up to the media.

“He is one of the first to arrive and he is one of the last to go. He is player who runs about 12 kilometres per match consistently. He is a player that we have the pleasure to know as a human being. He is abslutely fantastic, him and his family.
“Players like those become part of our environment and they help to shape character and attitude. We have many. Marcelo makes everybody around to be better players, no doubt,” he further explained.
