Sekhukhune United midfielder Linda Mntambo has hailed the qualities of Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams, who he has compared to former Arsenal, Barcelona and Chelsea star Cesc Fabregas.

Adams is enjoying a career revival at Sundowns which has also seen him recalled to the Bafana Bafana squad and Mntambo says the ex-Stellenbosch star should be the partner of Teboho Mokoena at the World Cup because of his unmatched qualities.

“At the national team, partnerships are important. Jayden understands the game beautifully, first of all he is press-resistant, he can help us in build-ups, he can play as an eight, in between the lines, he reminds me of Cesc Fabregas, at Arsenal I could see how good he was,” he said as per Soccer Laduma.

“But when he was at Spain national team, he could play as a six, as an eight, as a ten, as a false nine. Jayden whenever he’s on the ball it looks like there’s a pause (on the game), it looks like he has time, the game slows down when he has the ball. But other players don’t have that space and time.”

Cardoso on why Bafana can surprise at World Cup

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso believes having many of his players in the Bafana Bafana team will help South Africa to World Cup success.

Sundowns players will form the bulk of Hugo Broos’ squad with the likes of goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, full-backs Aubrey Modiba and Khuliso Mudau as well as midfielder Teboho Mokoena certain of a place in the starting XI.

Cardoso thinks the players’ experience at top tournaments like the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup will help South Africa play without fear and pull off upsets as they have already competed at a global stage.

“The details matter. The first match is crucial; it relieves the big pressure. It is important that South Africans support the boys without putting unnecessary weight on them. The group is not easy, but it is not impossible,” said Cardoso.
