South Africa legend Jomo Sono has recently been bashing Orlando Pirates midfielder Patrick Maswanganyi, claiming he can't match him.
Tito was recently handed the iconic number 10. jersey to don in the Caf Champions League matches. He has drawn a comparison with Sono with his showboating skill but the former attacker did not buy the idea.
“I saw [Tito dancing on the ball] and going towards his own goal and I switched to English football. He was going this way but Pirates were going that way, I don’t know. I am not saying it’s wrong but the only time I saw him was when he was doing that,” he said in a recent interview.
“I entertained the crowd but I wasn’t going that way when Pirates were going in a different direction. Jingles Pereira was my shadow and followed me all over the field. I dribbled past him but he went around to hit me and the referee blew the whistle and I stood on the ball. That’s all I did, I stood on top of the ball after the referee blew the whistle, and from there I took the ball and I went on to score.”
Modise is my role model, Maswanganyi opens up
Maswanganyi has now conceded former Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Teko Modise is his idol.
“For me, it’s got to be Teko Modise, because I grew up watching him, and the way he plays, the way he dresses, for me was a key point in my career, I always wanted to be like him.
“I always tried to copy him but we are different people and I have to be myself sometimes but he played a big role in my life so I had to adjust and try to be like him, so yeah.”
Last season, Tito scored 10 goals and provided 12 assists in the 40 games for Bucs across all competitions. In the new campaign, he has a goal in the eight matches played so far.
