Minnesota United FC have secured the future of Bafana Bafana star Bongokuhle Hlongwane, signing him to a contract extension that runs through 2027 with a club option for 2028.

Hlongwane joined Minnesota in January 2022 from Maritzburg United in the South African top-flight. Since then, he has been a key contributor, recording 30 goals and 14 assists in 108 appearances across all competitions.

Last season, Hlongwane led the team in scoring with 11 goals, helping Minnesota secure a return to the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs. His 30 goals in an MNUFC uniform rank second in club history, trailing only Robin Lod who has 32.

“Since his arrival, Bongi has continued to improve his game and has had a positive impact on the team when it came to his success on and off of the field,” said chief soccer officer Khaled El-Ahmad.

“His new contract is a testament to Minnesota and MLS, and our club looks forward to seeing his continued growth and work ethic contribute to the success of our upcoming year and beyond.”

Meanwhile for Bafana Bafana, Hlongwane has scored four goals in 18 appearances for the South African national team.

HLONGWANE’S WORDS AFTER SIGNING NEW CONTRACT

“I’m grateful to be a part of this amazing team again; it means a lot to me and my family,” said Hlongwane. “I can’t wait to continue playing in front of our fans, and I hope for more joy and success.”
