MLS rival coach sends message to Mbokazi after Chicago Fire signing

Philadelphia Union head coach Bradley Carnell has offered guidance to Mbekezeli Mbokazi, who is set to leave Orlando Pirates and join Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire after the Africa Cup of Nations.

Carnell, a former Kaizer Chiefs defender in the late 1990s and a 42-cap Bafana Bafana international, steered Philadelphia to the Conference semi-finals this season after clinching the Supporters’ Shield. One of his standout performers was ex-Stellenbosch FC defender Olwethu Makhanya, whose rise in MLS serves as a blueprint for Mbokazi’s transition.

“I think Mbokazi has the quality. Now he just needs to show the work ethic, the work rate, and the quality he’s already been displaying,” Carnell told FARPost.

“He shouldn’t think he’s already made it because of a big transfer. He has to stay humble and win the confidence of his teammates.”

Carnell, who faced Chicago Fire in the playoffs, believes Mbokazi’s attributes will fit well with the team’s attacking style under coach Gregg Berhalter. “They’re a good team with some talented individuals and a very attacking style that should suit Mbokazi’s qualities,” he said.

On the challenge of adapting abroad, Carnell added: “He’ll have to show the character to keep working away from home, away from South Africa – that’s always the big challenge. It’s something Olwethu Makhanya did very well, to accept that challenge and stay humble, and I’d say Mbokazi should do exactly the same. He has to follow in Makhanya’s footsteps.”

With the move confirmed, Mbokazi now faces the test of proving his talent on a bigger stage.
