Carling All-Stars head coach Manqoba Mngqithi expressed frustration after his side’s 2-0 defeat to Orlando Pirates, insisting his team should have been awarded at least three penalties. Still, he added that he would willingly apologise if his assessment proved incorrect.
Mngqithi’s team became the first All-Stars outfit unable to defend the Black Label crown, falling to late goals from Sifiso Luthuli and Boitumelo Radiopane at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The victory handed Pirates their third trophy of the season.
Reflecting on the match, Mngqithi lamented the missed penalty calls, which he felt were a result of the pressure his side placed on the Buccaneers.
“I think it was just unfortunate because, in my opinion, on any other day, we could’ve won the game,” Mngqithi told SuperSport TV in his post-match interview.
“We had three penalty shouts, in my view. Our passing game was good, our field occupation was strong, and we had vertical movements that consistently threatened the box. That’s where I believe the penalties should have been given.
From where I was sitting, I’m convinced they were penalties. But if I’m wrong, I’ll gladly apologise.”
