Mofokeng reveals Pirates’ tactics against defensive teams after sinking Magesi

Orlando Pirates forward Relebohile Mofokeng has opened up about how they planned to down Magesi FC after learning that they would put up a defensive display.

Mofokeng combined with Yanele Mbuthuma to hand Abdeslam Ouaddou’s team a 2-0 win at Orlando Stadium on Saturday as he scored and set up the striker who also did the same for him.

Pirates were too good for Magesi, whose decision to sit back did not yield the desired result, as the Bucs forwards, led by Mofokeng, still opened them up.

Mofokeng on playing low blocks

Mofokeng says Ouaddou had been working on how to play against a low block and the game allowed them to flourish given the attacking talents within their ranks.

“Against a low block, we will always have an opportunity to play, opportunity to get touches, so yeah I think we did very well. We trained the low blocks so yeah, I think we did very well,” he told SuperSport TV.

Mofokeng says Pirates had learned from their mistakes against Sekhukhune United a week earlier, when they dominated the game but failed to get past their tight defence.

Pirates star keen to maintain momentum

“We needed the three points in our first game [against Sekhukhune United], we missed our opportunities, so we thought that this game will be the game for us to fix our problems, so I think we did very well to get the three points,” he added.

“Well done to the gents for getting the maximum points. Our fans always come in numbers. They make it very easy for us to have confidence to keep on going. The support they give us is very great. We enjoy it and when we do mistakes, they keep us going.”

Victory pushed Pirates to 32 points from 15 matches on the table, same as leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who have a better goal difference, but they still have a game in hand over the PSL champions.
