Mokoena eyes all-time scoring record held by Pirates star

Bennet Mokoena, Mamelodi Sundowns’ rising star, has set his sights on breaking the all-time scoring record in the DStv Diski Challenge, a feat no player has achieved since the league's inception in 2014.

The current benchmark stands at 25 goals, set by Orlando Pirates striker Boitumelo Radiopane during the 2021/22 season. That campaign remains the last time a player crossed the 20-goal mark in the Reserve League.

Mokoena wants to rewrite history

“I’m aiming for 30 goals this season,” said the 18-year-old confidently. “I believe it’s possible. I just need to stay injury-free, improve a few aspects of my game, and be more composed in front of goal,” he told supersport.

Last season, Mokoena scored six goals in limited appearances. This time around, he’s already off to a flying start, netting five goals in his first six matches. If his form continues, he could be on track to shatter Radiopane’s record and become the first player to hit the 30-goal mark in a single Diski Challenge season.

I want to be consistent

Beyond personal glory, Mokoena sees this goal-scoring mission as a pathway to national recognition.

“I want to be consistent this season because it will also boost my chances of being called up to the Under-20 Amajita squad,” he added.

Despite some slow starts in matches, Mokoena praised his team’s resilience: “We’ve shown great fighting spirit. Even when things haven’t gone our way early in games, we’ve bounced back and got results. That mentality will help us throughout the season.”
