Mosimane pressured to consider Kaizer Chiefs fan favourite

Bafana Bafana fans have called on coach Pitso Mosimane to consider a former Kaizer Chiefs academy star in his next national team selection.

Mosimane started his second reign as Bafana coach with three straight wins, when his team beat Guinea 2-1 and Eritrea 5-0 in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, before edging Egypt 1-0 in a friendly match in September and October.

The Bafana coach took to social media to express his delight at the flawless start and it is from there that he was flooded with requests to ensure former Chiefs defender Aden McCarthy is part of his next squad.

“Being in camp with the team last month was a privilege,” Mosimane wrote. “We tested ourselves, seen the quality within this team and made a positive start towards AFCON 2027 Qualifiers.”

“There is still a long road ahead, but the direction is clear and the work continues. Grateful to represent South Africa and to everyone who continues to support Bafana Bafana,” the Bafana coach further stated.

Mosimane receives McCarthy plea

In the comments section, South Africans made their feelings known about who they want to see in the squad with McCarthy’s name featuring prominently.

“Great start coach! On that note I would also like to make a case for Aden McCarthy to be on your radar as well, as you said yourself, we have quality,” a fan made the request.

“[Siyabonga] Ngezana, [Yusuf] Maart and Aden McCarthy are knocking at the door. There is also Luke Leroux in Belgium, our midfield is starving but the options are expanding,” said another fan.

McCarthy left Chiefs in the summer transfer window for Azerbaijani giants Sabah FK where he has quickly become a key player, featuring in 10 games across all competitions this season.

That includes starting two historic UEFA Champions League games, when the club made its debut in the competition, starting with a 4-0 defeat away to Manchester United, before they made history by winning their first-ever game in the competition, following a 2-0 victory against Czech giants Slavia Prague on Tuesday.

McCarthy left Chiefs after just one season in the senior team, having come through the youth ranks, including captaining the DStv Diski Challenge team to their maiden title in 2025.
