Mzansi mourns death of ex-Kaizer Chiefs midfielder

The South African football community is in mourning after the death of former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Michael Nkambule, who passed away at the age of 37.

Nkambule died on Friday from injuries he sustained in a car accident two weeks prior. The talented player, who hailed from Etwatwa in Daveyton, began his career with local amateur side Brazil before joining the Kaizer Chiefs development academy.

His promising career also included a stint in Europe with French club Strasbourg. Although he did not make a first-team appearance, the experience was a significant chapter in his football journey before he returned to South Africa.

Back home, Nkambule played for several top-flight clubs, including SuperSport United and Black Leopards, where he was highly regarded for his technical skill and dedication.

Family explains ex-Chiefs star’s death

Family spokesperson and friend Siyabonga Moloi confirmed the tragic news to Soccer Laduma, explaining that Nkambule had been in hospital fighting for his life following the accident.

“Michael was involved in a car accident about two weeks ago. The vehicle he was driving overturned and he was alone at the time,” Moloi stated as per Soccer Laduma. “He was initially rushed to Far East Rand Hospital before being transferred to Johannesburg Gen Hospital, where he underwent surgery for spinal cord injuries. The operation was successful, and he was later transferred back to Far East Rand Hospital. Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries this afternoon (Friday).”

Moloi mentioned that he learned of the news from Nkambule’s younger brother and had been in close contact with the family throughout the ordeal.

“His younger brother, who is also a friend of mine, called me with the sad news,” Moloi said. “We’ve been communicating since Michael was admitted to hospital, and he kept me updated on his condition.”

What Nkambule was doing in retirement

Even after retiring from professional football, Nkambule remained active in the sport. He was a respected member of Ditlhake Masters, a team of former professional players, and frequently participated in legends matches.

The loss is also a personal blow for Moloi, who co-owned a football club with Nkambule in their hometown of Etwatwa, where they focused on nurturing young talent.

“Michael and I co-owned a football club in Etwatwa, so this is devastating for me,” Moloi added. “I’m speaking to you from his family home, where relatives have gathered. The family is expected to decide on the funeral arrangements over the weekend.”

Nkambule’s passing has left a significant void in the football community, with tributes expected from former teammates and friends who remember his enduring passion for the game.
