Nedbank Cup: Chiefs handed minnows in Round of 32, Pirates to dig deeper

Published on by Willis Sob

Kaizer Chiefs have landed a fair draw in the Round of 32 of the annual Nedbank Cup competition.

The Glamour Boys have gone nine seasons without a trophy, and this is their only realistic chance of at least ending the drought. In a draw conducted on Thursday, January 9, Amakhosi were paired with minnows Free Agents, who are playing in Safa's third division.

Chiefs are currently placed fifth on the table with 18 points, 12 less than leaders Mamelodi Sundowns who have a match at hand, meaning chances of winning the Premier Soccer League are slim.

The Soweto giants were eliminated from the Carling Knockout by Masandawana in the quarter-final phase.

The defending champions Orlando Pirates – who have already successfully defended their MTN8 crown, have a tricky assignment against fellow top-tier side Richards Bay.

Defending Premier Soccer League champions Sundowns will face Sibanye Golden Stars. Other clashes involving PSL teams include Sekhukhune United against Cape Town City, Carling Knockout Champions Magesi FC who will play SuperSport United, and Golden Arrows against Chippa United.

Polokwane City, Royal AM, AmaZulu, and Marumo Gallants have landed relatively easier teams.
