Stellenbosch coach Gavin Hunt expressed his delight after his side pulled off a memorable upset against defending champions Kaizer Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup on Wednesday.
The 2-1 victory not only secured Stellenbosch a place in the last-16 but also marked a rare home win over their long-time nemesis.
Chiefs had dominated previous visits, winning seven of their last 11 away fixtures against Stellenbosch. But this time, they were undone by a spirited performance and a stunning long-range strike from Devin Titus, which ultimately proved decisive.
Reflecting on the match on SuperSport in a post match interview, Hunt described it as a “proper cup tie” and praised his team’s early dominance.
“We certainly deserved the first two goals. We could have been out of sight then, but they got back in the game a little bit and had one or two chances,” he said.
In the second half, Chiefs pulled a goal back, but Stellenbosch held firm. Hunt credited goalkeeper Sage Stephens for key saves that kept his side ahead.
“It was a hell of a game on a very difficult pitch. In the end we had to see it out, and I thought we did that well. It was important,” Hunt added.
While Titus was officially named man of the match, Hunt had a different view. He singled out striker Wonderboy Makhubu for his leadership and work rate.
“For me, man of the match was Wonderboy Makhubu. I thought he was outstanding. That’s a proper striker leading the line, and he could have scored at the end,” Hunt said.
The victory sends Stellenbosch into the last-16 with renewed confidence, having toppled one of their toughest rivals in cup competition.
