Kaizer Chiefs knocked out of Nedbank Cup by impressive Stellenbosch

Kaizer Chiefs suffered early elimination from the Nedbank Cup when they lost their Round of 32 clash 2-1 against Stellenbosch FC on Wednesday.

In a sold-out Cape Town Stadium, with kick off delayed for 30 minutes to allow the fans to come in, the game promised fireworks and it was delivered.

Just like their last meeting in September, when Stellies eliminated Chiefs from the Carling Knockout, they did the double act on the Glamour Boys with their former coach Gavin Hunt getting one over Amakhosi.

Chiefs downed by stellar goal

Chiefs were behind as soon as the 10th minute when Flavio Silva hit Thabo Molaisane on the head while he was clearing the ball in the box, leading to a penalty.

The Chiefs striker was lucky to escape a red card but Molaisane did not recover from the hit, being replaced after suffering a head injury.

Nigerian Ibraheem Jabaar stepped up and scored the resultant penalty to give Stellenbosch a deserved lead.

Stellenbosch would double their advantage 12 minutes later and in some style. Devin Titus picked the ball just outside the box and fired an unstoppable shot past Brandon Petersen who was off his line for 2-0.

What next for Amakhosi?

Chiefs would get a number of chances which they missed after a number of top saves from Sage Stephens in the Stellies’ goal but found the breakthrough in the second half.

A foul in the box led to a Chiefs penalty which Flavio Silva converted in the 54th minute to give his side hope.

However, despite their relentless attack, Stellenbosch held firm to win the match 2-1 and knock Chiefs out, meaning the Soweto giants will not be defending their title.

Chiefs are now left to fight for the PSL and CAF Confederation Cup while Stellies proceed to the Round of 16 where they have joined Mamelodi Sundowns, who also won 2-1 against third tier side Gomora United on Wednesday.
