Orlando Pirates confirm major transfer departure

Orlando Pirates have confirmed the departure of playmaker Patrick ‘Tito’ Maswangayi from the club to Bahrain.

Maswanganyi’s future became a subject of interest at the weekend when it was revealed that he is headed to the Gulf, having been left out of the squad for their MTN8 semi-final first leg against Srkhukhune United on Saturday.

Pirates have now confirmed that ‘Tito’, as the midfielder is popularly known, has left the club for Bahrain Premier League side Alkhaldiya Sports Club.

“The 28-year-old playmaker departs the Buccaneers having firmly established himself as a fan favourite during his time at the Club,” Pirates stated through a club statement.

“Maswanganyi remained an important part of the technical team’s plans for the season. However, following discussions with the player and his representatives, he expressed a clear desire to pursue a new opportunity abroad.

“In recognition of his service to the Club and his ambitions for the next chapter of his career, Orlando Pirates agreed not to stand in his way. A transfer was subsequently concluded with Alkhaldiya Sports Club.”

Pirates have lauded Maswanganyi for his immense contribution to the club where he has made 120 appearances, scored 28 goals and provided 21 assists.

“Tito leaves having made a lasting impression both on and off the field. From his first appearance in the famous black and white jersey, he gave the Ghost countless moments to celebrate and represented this club with pride,” Pirates further stated.

“He departs as a league champion, a firm favourite among the supporters and a player who understood the responsibility of representing Orlando Pirates Football Club.

“The Club thanks Tito for his dedicated service and wishes him every success in Bahrain and in the next chapter of his career.”

Maswanganyi, who joined Pirates from SuperSport United in 2023, leaves after winning six trophies, including last season’s league title.
