Goss over Chaine

Former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper coach Alex Heredia says the current goalkeeping situation in the national team is complicated.

In the same breath, however, Heredia believes head coach Pitso Mosimane has a solution ahead of the back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Kenya on 13 and 17 November.

Mosimane selected the final squad on Thursday, picking Ronwen Williams (69 caps), Ricardo Goss (7 caps), and Sipho Chaine (5 caps) in the goalkeeping department.

Williams, however, has missed the past couple of games for Mamelodi Sundowns due to injury concerns, with Goss stepping in to keep two clean sheets against Marumo Gallants and Golden Arrows, as Sundowns progressed to the Carling Knockout semi-finals.

“It’s a complicated situation. This is quite interesting. Look, the number one, of course, is Ronwen. There’s no discussion. But, honestly, if Ronwen is not there, to me, Goss can be the solution,” Heredia told Soccer Laduma.

“Yeah, look, it’s something to be very careful about, because there’s also Chaine, who always keeps clean sheets. But Goss and Chaine’s problem is their lack of international experience. There’s a big difference between them and Ronwen.

“If Ronwen is not available, well, probably Goss. I would pick him to start against Kenya. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with Chaine, but Goss, like I said, has been around for too long in the national team,” he concluded.

Ouaddou behidn Moremi’s impressive run?

Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has explained the thinking behind Tshepang Moremi’s recent impressive scoring form, revealing how he has encouraged the winger to maximise his natural qualities rather than trying to turn him into a different type of player.

Moremi has been enjoying a productive spell in front of goal, with his attacking contributions becoming increasingly important for the Buccaneers as the season progresses.

The 26-year-old’s recent performances have also highlighted his ability to offer the Buccaneers a different attacking dimension, particularly with his pace and willingness to run at opposition defences.

With Bucs preparing to host Sekhukhune United in the Carling Knockout Cup quarter-finals at Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday, Ouaddou was asked about the work that has gone into improving Moremi’s positioning and attacking contribution.

“Look, you know, to be a coach, it’s not only planning training exercises, drills, team talks and the game model. It’s important to analyse the profile and the qualities of your players in order to draw or deliver a game model that can suit them.

“And speaking about the player, I know that in modern football there are a lot of people watching big teams, Manchester City, Barcelona, all these teams, and everybody wants to have inverted players.

“But sometimes, even though I want to have inverted players, the quality of the players is sometimes to be simple and to have a winger. He’s not a No.10, he’s not a No.10, and I cannot convert him into a No.10.

“I always say to Moremi that you have a special quality that you are gifted with. God gave you a special quality, and this is speed. For me, I told him, you know, if I was a player, I wanted to have your speed. Maybe I could walk until the end of the world. I cannot have your speed. I will walk a little bit, but you have to use this speed efficiently.

“When you are going to understand that you have to use your quality, you are going to be efficient. So, it’s what we did. I cannot go deep to tell you how we use his speed and where we use it because I’m going to give you the plan.

“But he’s using his quality in a wonderful way that helps the team and helps his teammates,” he concluded.
