Orlando Pirates turn their attention to cup assignments with a home clash against Sekhukhune United in the Carling Knockout quarter-final on Saturday.

Pirates and Sekhukhune have already faced off three times this season and therefore this is a clash of familiar foes.

The Buccaneers have come out on top in all three meetings. Pirates won 1-0 in the MTN8 semi-final first leg before securing a 3-0 victory in the return match and in between, they beat Babina Noko 2-0 in the league, all games played over the course of one week in August.

Sekhukhune’s impressive run under Zothwane

That poor run spelt the end for coach Cedric Kaze with Papi Zothwane taking over and since then, they went on a five-match unbeaten run before Milford FC ended it with a 1-0 win last weekend.

Over that period, Sekhukhune had won three and drawn two, and that run included a 3-1 win over Richards Bay in the Carling Knockout Round of 16.

However, Sekhukhune have their work cut out against a Pirates team that has lost just one game this season, the MTN8 final against Mamelodi Sundowns, and before their 2-1 win over Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto derby last weekend, they had gone seven games without conceding, winning six.

Pirates have enjoyed the upper hand in these knockout encounters, winning both single-match meetings and their most recent two-legged contest to maintain an unblemished record in cup competitions against Sekhukhune.

Saturday’s clash will be their first meeting in the Carling Knockout while their rivalry stretches back to 2021 when the Buccaneers registered the first of nine wins in 15 encounters with Babina Noko across competitions.
