Latest news about Orlando Pirates in the last 24 hours, including Bucs and Mamelodi Sundowns title race compared to that of Arsenal and Manchester City, why it is boring that Soweto giants haven’t won PSL crown, and more.
It is like Arsenal and Man City!
Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has compared the PSL title race to the Premier League’s between Arsenal and Manchester City.
“In every league, in every country, if you can look at the Premier League in England, Manchester City and Arsenal are fighting, I think it’s the same fight that we are seeing in South Africa,” Ouaddou opened up with the media.
“It creates a lot of interest for South African fans, it’s not funny when you see a team in 10 games before the end of the season, you see the team is winning the league.

“So, for you as a fan, if you know at the beginning of this season who is going to be champion, you lose interest.
“So, this season, we try to bring more competitiveness. I think the boys really did well. Let’s see what the result will be at the end of this season. But the most important thing is to give this competitiveness to the PSL until the end.”
McKenzie unhappy with Soweto Derby’s organisation
that the Soweto derby event is a disaster “waiting to happen” and has taken the matter of overcrowding and security concerns in a very serious light.
“I need to also address the issue of the derby. The derby is an accident waiting to happen, it happened in Orkney, people died, it happened at Ellis Park, we’re never going to allow it to happen again,” McKenzie said in a presser.
“We cannot celebrate that there were 104 000 people at the stadium that is supposed to take 90 000. I met with the Chairman of the PSL (Dr. Irvin Khoza), I met with different stakeholders and I want to make it clear, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates have done everything that is expected of them.

“The problem was lack of adequate policing, the problem was with the ticket sales and Stadium Management (company), this is something I take very seriously (and) it’s not going to happen under my watch as the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture,” McKenzie concluded.
Boring not to see Soweto giants getting crowned
With the title race between Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates now going all the way to the last two games, there has been a bold backing for The Buccaneers.
“Based on the football that Pirates have played this season, they are the ones deserving of winning this league,” says former Pirates striker Lelo Mbele.
“I honestly don’t wish this Pirates team to go through the pain of playing football and finishing second. Plus, Pirates hasn’t won the league in a very long time, so it will be refreshing to have a different winner.
“I don’t think it portrays the correct image to have one team winning the league for almost 10 years in a row. It is not exciting for everyone that only one team wins the league for so long, non-stop.

“I think even with the sponsors, the hype will be bigger if Pirates win the league this time instead of Sundowns since they are a bigger team. So, I think even the sponsors secretly wish it will be Pirates winning it since (Kaizer) Chiefs cannot win it anymore.
“Even the neutrals want Pirates. It is boring that the two Soweto giants have not won the league for more than 10 years but yet they are the only teams that can have almost 100 000 fans when they play,” Mbele concluded..
