Players that Orlando Pirates should release

Published on by

Orlando Pirates are set to undergo a squad revamp as they strategically aim to return even stronger next season. Afrik-Foot delves into five players the Buccaneers might consider releasing to facilitate this fresh start.

1 – Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo:

Ndlondlo has faced considerable challenges in breaking into the regular starting lineup this recently concluded season.

He made a mere 13 appearances across four competitions, out of a total of close to 50 matches played by the Buccaneers. With Thalente Mbatha, Makhehlene Makhaula, and Goodman Mosele seemingly preferred in midfield, and the promising emergence of talents like Cemran Dansin and Simphiwe Selepe, Ndlondlo's path to consistent game time appears increasingly difficult.

2 – Bandile Shandu:

While a loyal and long-serving member of the squad, Shandu was not initially signed by Pirates for the right-back position he now occasionally plays.

He has not consistently lived up to expectations for all the positions he plays and has also struggled for regular playing time. His increased involvement towards the end of the season was largely due to injuries affecting other right-backs, including Thabiso Monyane, Thabiso Lebitso, and occasionally Deano Van Rooyen.

3 – Azola Tshobeni:

With only three appearances this season, Tshobeni's chances of making a significant impact in attacking midfield seem slim.

Since his promotion, he's had two loan spells with second-tier side JDR Stars. Given his unsuccessful return to Pirates following these stints, it might be time for him to seek opportunities elsewhere to reignite his career.

4 – Zakhele Lepasa:

The pecking order in the Buccaneers' attack has become clear, with Evidence Makgopa and Tshegofatso Mabasa firmly established as the trusted men for the Sea Robbers.

This past season marked the second consecutive campaign where Lepasa struggled to break into the starting lineup. Compounding his challenges, injuries severely hampered his progress, leading to him not making a single appearance across all competitions.

5 – Monnapule Saleng: Saleng's issues with the club appear to have deepened to an extent that a seamless return to his previous form and integration into the squad could prove challenging.

Given the circumstances, a mutually beneficial decision might be to allow him to depart for a fresh start elsewhere, providing both player and club with a new direction.
