Police arrest fans over unruly behaviour during Gallants vs Pirates match

Police have arrested seven fans in Free State following violence that was witnessed during Marumo Gallants and Orlando Pirates’ PSL clash on Saturday.

Gallants stunned Pirates when they secured a 2-0 victory at the Free State Stadium in Mangaung to dent their title aspirations and after the contest, fans stormed onto the pitch while four children were reportedly lost.

There was also malicious damage to property and police have launched a manhunt that led to the arrest of seven individuals with more still being pursued.

Police ask for help after violence in Free State

“Police are appealing to the public for cooperation following incidents of public violence and malicious damage to property after a soccer match held at the Free State Rugby Stadium on 1 March 2025,” said Police spokesperson Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli.

“During the previous match, seven individuals were arrested for malicious damage to property and public violence. Additionally, four children were reported lost after being separated from their parents or guardians. Thankfully, all were reunited with their families.

“With another game scheduled to take place at the Free State Stadium today, 2 March 2025, police are issuing a strong plea to all spectators to conduct themselves in a responsible and law-abiding manner,” he said.

The police boss also advised fans to behave well while urging parents to keep a close eye on their children to avoid getting lost while revealing that those arrested will be prosecuted.

“We urge all attendees to behave responsibly and refrain from engaging in any acts of violence, vandalism, or public disorder. Parents and guardians are strongly advised to keep a close watch on their children at all times to prevent them from becoming lost,” he added.

“Individuals without valid tickets are strictly advised not to approach the stadium perimeter. Access will be denied, and those attempting to gain unauthorised entry will face legal consequences. Follow the instructions of police officers and security personnel to ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone.

“Police are committed to ensuring the safety and security of all attendees at the stadium. We will have a strong presence from different units who will be dealing with crowd management at the event to maintain order and address any potential disturbances.

“We appeal to the public to work with us to ensure a peaceful and enjoyable sporting experience for all. The seven arrested suspects will appear in the Bloemfontein magistrate court soon.”
