Winners of the 2024-25 Betway Premiership will earn R20 million following an announcement by the PSL on Wednesday.
PSL chairman Irvin Khoza made the revelation on Wednesday, ending speculation over how much the champions of South Africa’s top flight will pocket for winning the title.
The R20 million is an increase on the R15 million which champions Mamelodi Sundowns were awarded for winning the league last year from the deal with DStv.
R20 million reasons for PSL clubs to be motivated
“The prize money for the 2024/25 Betway Premiership winner will be R20 million,” Khoza said in a brief announcement.
PSL signed a three-year deal worth R900 million with betting firm Betway early this year but did not reveal how the money would trickle down to clubs.
Now, Khoza has cleared the air, albeit on just the winners, but it is still not known how much the other clubs will receive.
Will it be Pirates or Sundowns on the winners’ podium?
“Watch this space, in a couple of weeks the rest of the prize breakdown will be announced. Number two, number three,” added Khoza.
Orlando Pirates currently lead the PSL standings with the maximum 21 points from seven games, six ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns, who host Polokwane City on Wednesday.
Pirates and Sundowns are seen as the two sides that have a realistic chance of winning the title and they now have R20 million reasons to be motivated.
