Jose Riveiro opens up on coaching Bafana Bafana in future: ‘You never know’

Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro is not ruling out the Bafana Bafana job if an opportunity presents itself in future.

Riveiro is in his third year in South Africa, having enjoyed a successful stint at Pirates so far, with five trophies since taking over the Buccaneers in July 2022.

With his future up in the air, given he is yet to commit to a new deal, Riveiro was asked if the Bafana Bafana job would appeal to him and he remained cagey in his response.

Pirates coach cagey over national team job

“You never know, right now my focus is 100 per cent on the responsibility that I have [at Orlando Pirates],” said Riveiro.

“Usually, national teams used to be coaches with more experience, more kilometres in this job, but it’s also changing right now, you can see some young coaches, coaching top national teams around the world.

“Who knows? I like coaching and right now I like to do what I am doing at Orlando Pirates.”

Pirates is the first job in which Riveiro has lasted long as a head coach but he has done brilliantly, silencing his doubters who questioned his credentials when he arrived.

Would Riveiro be a success at Bafana?

The Spanish mentor has plenty of admirers in South Africa and would be a popular choice were SAFA to offer him a deal but it looks like that will have to take sometime given current Bafana boss Hugo Bross has a contract running up to 2026.

Broos has done well so far, returning belief in the national team, after leading South Africa to an impressive third place at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, before easily qualifying for the 2025 edition, and they are also in a good position in their 2026 World Cup qualifying group.
