Thapelo Maseko: Sundowns decide destination for wantaway winger

Mamelodi Sundowns are reportedly favouring an international transfer for winger Thapelo Maseko, aiming to avoid a move to a domestic rival.

The player has been excluded from first-team training under coach Miguel Cardoso and was notably absent from the club’s pre-season tour in Austria.

Consequently, Sundowns have given Maseko the go-ahead to seek opportunities elsewhere, whether through a loan or a permanent deal.

Why Sundowns want winger to go abroad

Maseko recently returned to Chloorkop following a loan spell at AEL Limassol in Cyprus during the latter half of last season. While the Cypriot club expressed interest in retaining him, a return was complicated by payment disputes during his initial stay, which required FIFA’s intervention.

It is understood that both Maseko and his representatives are not keen on revisiting that option.

Instead, Sundowns are actively encouraging offers from abroad, a strategy designed to prevent strengthening their competition within the Premier Soccer League, as per SABC.

The winger’s profile has risen dramatically following a standout performance in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. He scored the crucial goal in Bafana Bafana’s group-stage win over South Korea, which secured a historic spot in the round of 32.

Thapelo Maseko’s rise to prominence

Sources suggest Maseko prefers a permanent transfer, but this will hinge on whether potential suitors can meet Sundowns’ asking price or if they opt for a loan with an obligation to buy.

Since joining Sundowns in 2023, Maseko made an immediate impact, earning the Player of the Tournament award at the inaugural African Football League. He was also part of the South African squad that secured a bronze medal at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations.

However, a significant injury sustained in Ivory Coast temporarily halted his momentum, leading to a challenging period that he openly discussed before his career revival in Cyprus. His strong comeback earned him a recall to the national team for the World Cup qualifiers, and with a local transfer now unlikely, his next club is expected to be outside of South Africa.
