Mamelodi Sundowns were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Chippa United in their Betway Premiership opener at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
The match saw the reigning champions take an early lead but ultimately fail to secure a win against a resilient Chippa side. New signing Arthur Sales scored the opening goal for Sundowns in the 32nd minute, expertly finishing a clever pass from Tashreeq Matthews. However, the visiting team struggled to convert their dominance in possession into further goals.
Chippa, led by coach Sinethemba Badela, started the game with high intensity, putting Sundowns’ defense under pressure in the opening five minutes.
They remained defensively solid throughout the match, frustrating Sundowns' attempts to double their lead. Chippa’s persistence was rewarded in the 65th minute when Khaya Mfecane's shot took a crucial deflection off Teboho Mokoena, giving the home side a well-earned equalizer.
The match provided a glimpse into both teams' new lineups and tactical plans. Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso made a notable change by deploying new left-back Fawaaz Basadien in a right-wing back position.
PETER SHALULILE ON THE BENCH
Meanwhile, star striker Peter Shalulile, who has been at the center of rumors about a possible departure from the club, was a notable absentee from the starting lineup, remaining on the bench.
For Chippa, new acquisitions Sammy Seabi and Goodman Mosele were both included in the starting lineup and played a key role in their team's strong defensive performance.
As Sundowns desperately searched for a winner, Cardoso made a series of substitutions, including bringing on veterans like Themba Zwane and youngsters such as Siyabonga Mabena.
However, their efforts were in vain. In the 88th minute, a brilliant back-heel pass from Zwane set up Mabena for a golden opportunity behind the defense, but the youngster sent his shot wide of the goal. The home side managed to hold on until the final whistle, with the points being shared, leaving Sundowns with a frustrating start to their title defense.
