The future of Themba Zwane at Mamelodi Sundowns is under the spotlight, with the veteran midfielder expected to make a call on his next move in the coming weeks.
Affectionately known as Mshishi, Zwane remains a key figure in Miguel Cardoso’s squad and is one of the longest-serving players at the club. Remarkably, he and goalkeeper Denis Onyango are the only survivors from Pitso Mosimane’s iconic team that clinched Sundowns’ first-ever CAF Champions League title in 2016.
Over more than a decade, Zwane has been the heartbeat of Masandawana’s midfield, a trusted leader whose influence has spanned multiple coaching eras. His current one-year deal expires in June, making him eligible to sign a pre-contract elsewhere under FIFA rules.
However, sources close to the player suggest the 36-year-old is leaning toward staying at Sundowns on a short-term deal, despite a season disrupted by injuries. While Cardoso has used him sparingly since his return, the club hierarchy remains confident in his ability to contribute and is pushing for his continued stay.
Chairman Tlhopie Motsepe speaking to Mamelodi Sundowns Magazine recently hinted at plans to secure Zwane and other key players whose contracts end in June:
“Starting 2026 strongly will be a key objective for Themba Zwane and his teammates. The Board has already begun the work of ensuring the right people and players are in place for a season filled with purpose and ambition,” Motsepe said.
