The 53-year-old tactician has explained what his position is at the PSL champions
Manqoba Mngqithi has shrugged off talk over his new position at Mamelodi Sundowns amidst reports that he is now the head coach at the club.
Mngqithi had been serving as senior coach under Rhulani Mokwena before the 37-year-old, who has since joined Moroccan giants Wydad AC, left the club early last month.
Following his departure, the Brazilians have shaken up things in the coaching setup with Steve Komphela returning while ex-AmaZulu tactician Romain Folz has also been added to the technical bench.
However, Mngqithi does not want to be drawn into conversations about his role even if his agent Mike Makaab already revealed that he is the soon-to-be boss at Chloorkop.
‘We must move away from this obsession of positions’
“The question is right, but you’re asking the wrong person. I don’t know guys, but I can advise you to say ‘Coach Manqoba,’” he said at the MTN8 launch, as quoted by iDiski Times.
“We must move away from this obsession of position guys. This is killing our country in many ways. Positions are not the most important thing.
“In my opinion, a position is the lowest point of leadership. What is more important is your level of influence in everything you do.”
“And I was never a fan of positions, and I never perturbed when I see all these because I like it that in our country, we have different positions and names,” he added.
Mngqithi’s agent already revealed his new position at Sundowns
“Maybe tomorrow, I will also get a new position and you’ll get so excited sometimes. Positions usually for me, the work has not settled.”
Mngqithi has been leading Sundowns since Mokwena parted ways with the club at the beginning of July and Makaab let the cat out of the bag on what his next role would be during a recent radio interview.
“Manqoba was the Senior Coach assisting Rhulani Mokwena,” Makaab said on Extra Time on Gagasi FM.
“At this stage, Manqoba will take over as the Head Coach, and again it will be clarified over the weeks and months to come, and Steve Komphela returns as the Senior Coach.”
