The 2024 PSL season witnessed significant changes, including a new title sponsor (Betway) after DStv's early departure.
While progress was made in certain areas, challenges such as inconsistent officiating and fixture congestion persisted.
THE GOOD
- Increased Prize Money: Betway's sponsorship brought a significant boost, increasing the league prize money from R15 million to R20 million, a 25% increase.
- Some coaches meeting Bafana coach: A positive step was taken with PSL coaches engaging with Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos to enhance collaboration between parties.
- Strong AFCON Representation: South African league supplied the bulk of the 36 PSL-based players at the AFCON, making it the African league with the most representatives.
THE BAD
- Sundowns Dominance: Sundowns' overwhelming dominance last season, with a 23-point gap, has diminished the league's competitiveness and excitement.
- Disrupted Fixtures: Frequent fixture rescheduling due to CAF club competitions has created a disjointed league calendar, impacting fan engagement.
THE WORSE
- Poor Officiating: Concerns over poor officiating remain prevalent, with widespread calls for the introduction of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) to improve decision-making.
- Late Season Start: The delayed start of the season due to sponsorship negotiations impacted the league's momentum and the number of matches played by clubs.
