UEFA Champions League heartbreak for Siyabonga Ngezana

Bafana Bafana defender Siyabonga Ngezana’s hopes of playing in the prestigious UEFA Champions League next season has gone up in smoke.

Ngezana’s Romanian club FCSB were hoping to make it into the lucrative Champions League group stages but lost 2-1 at home to North Macedonia champions KF Shkendija on Wednesday.

Having suffered a 1-0 first leg loss away, FCSB knew they needed to win by at least two goals to advance to the next round but met their waterloo.

Ngezana started the match and managed 75 minutes and his team had a dream start when Juri Cisotti gave them a 1-0 lead after 28 minutes to tie the game 1-1 on aggregate.

What next for Ngezana in Europe?

However, five minutes later, KF Shkendija equalised and went 2-1 ahead on aggregate through Liridon Latifi and they looked on course to win it that way until three minutes from time when Vane Krstevski scored the second to kill off the tie.

Following their loss, FCSB will now drop to the UEFA Europa League where they will play Kosovo champions Football Club Drita over two legs.

Ngezana and his team-mates featured in the Europa League last season when they reached the Round of 16 before losing 7-1 on aggregate to French side Lyon.
