Published on by Nkosiyabuya Sithole

Afrik-Foot looks at key players to watch as Uganda hosts South Africa in a crucial Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Friday afternoon.

The match kicks off at 3 PM at the Mandela National Stadium and will be broadcast on SABC Sports. Both teams are strong contenders to secure their place in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Here are the five players to watch:

1 – Ronwen Williams – Goalkeeper (Bafana Bafana)

As always, the captain, Williams has become crucial for Bafana not only between the posts but with his leadership skills which aids in maintaining the team's organisation.

His presence is particularly vital during high-pressure situations, where he helps to stabilise the team, especially in away matches.

Recently, he was recognised as the ninth best goalkeeper globally in the Yashin Trophy category at the Ballon d'Or.

2 – Bathusi Aubaas – Midfielder (Bafana Bafana)

He appears to have regained his form at both the club and national team levels, delivering impressive performances recently.

He was instrumental in the recent AFCON qualifying matches against Congo, contributing significantly in both encounters.

Together with Mokoena, they form a strong partnership, and their synergy at Mamelodi Sundowns translates effectively to the national team.

3 – Teboho Mokoena – Midfielder (Bafana Bafana)

Teboho Mokoena has emerged as a key figure for the South African national team, having made a significant impact during the recent Africa Cup of Nations held in Ivory Coast earlier this year.

As a box-to-box midfielder, Mokoena offers considerable stability in both defensive and offensive roles. His contributions have been vital in the goal-scoring efforts of Hugo Broos’ team.

4 – Khalid Aucho – Midfielder (Uganda)

The 31-year-old is the crucial player for the Ugandan side, playing as a defensive midfielder. He turns out for the Tanzanian giants Young Africans SC.

His ability to break down opposition attacking moves gives his side a stability in the midfield. He’s also known for not losing the ball recklessly.

5 – Rogers Mato – Winger (Uganda)

The 23-year-old tormented Bafana Bafana in the first round, scoring a remarkable long-range goal that left goalkeeper Veli Mothwa unable to respond.

The 26-year-old plies his trade at the Macedonian First Football League side Brera Strumica where he has registered five assists in 15 games this season.
