Kaizer Chiefs joined Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates in the Carling Knockout semi-final following a 2-1 win over Siwelele FC on Sunday.
Chiefs had to do it late and the hard way when substitute Asanele Velebayi scored the winning goal seven minutes from time to hand coach Fernando da Cruz a much-needed win.
Chiefs had to come from behind to win as Siwelele opened the scoring when Siyabonga Ndebele jumped highest to head home from Manelisi Mazibuko’s corner after 11 minutes.
Chiefs restore parity from the spot
Amakhosi had a chance to level matters after 35 minutes when Vincent Pule brought down Mfundo Vilakazi resulting in a penalty. However, Mduduzi Shabalala stepped up but fired over the bar.
However, 10 minutes later, Chiefs got another penalty when Sibongiseni Mthethwa was fouled in the box. Vilakazi stepped up this time and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way for 1-1.
That led to 1-1 at the break with Chiefs enjoying the momentum as both sides headed into the break.
Chiefs came from the break with renewed vigour and Dillan Solomons nearly scored the second for the Glamour Boys after making a solo run only to shoot wide.
Vekebayi wins it for Amakhosi
Both sides then huffed and puffed for most of the second half and it looked like extra-time would be needed to settle the contest.
However, in the 83rd minute, Velebayi, who had been introduced in the second half alongside Thulani Mabaso and Flavio da Silva made a good run in the box before squeezing in at the near post for 2-1 in favour of Chiefs.
That is how it ended as Chiefs kept alive their hopes winning the Carling Knockout for the first time since 2010.
