The man who nearly derailed Bafana Bafana’s 2026 World Cup ambitions has been shown the exit door.
Michael Nees, the Zimbabwean coach whose Warriors side held South Africa to a crucial draw in a World Cup qualifier in Durban, has been sacked by the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) following a dismal run of results.
This development comes just before the 2025 AFCON in Morocco were Zimbabwe are in the same group as Bafana Bafana for the tournament set to take place in December. The two sides are now poised for a high-stakes reunion, but Zimbabwe will be heading into the continental showdown under new leadership.
ZIFA’s Statement on Nees’ Dismissal:
“The Executive Committee has resolved to terminate the contract of Mr. Michael Nees with immediate effect… His dedication to the game and his service to the national structures are appreciated.”
Nees’ tenure was marred by poor performances, with Zimbabwe failing to win a single match in this year’s World Cup qualifiers. Out of 16 matches under his leadership, the Warriors managed just two victories, both against Namibia during last year’s AFCON qualifiers.
Though his contract was set to run until December, ZIFA opted for an early termination, citing the need for urgent change. The association has promised to announce interim technical appointments soon, as they prepare for the AFCON campaign.
