Adams and Basadien advised to ditch Sundowns or miss out on World Cup

Mamelodi Sundowns duo Jayden Adams and Fawaaz Basadien have been advised to consider leaving the club in the January transfer window if they want to get back into the Bafana Bafana squad.

Adams and Basadien both left Stellenbosch FC for Sundowns in January and August respectively but have found playing time scarce at the club, seeing them lose their spots in the national team.

Adams started life at Sundowns brilliantly with coach Miguel Cardoso utilising his talents and also earned a place in coach Hugo Broos’ team but has since dropped down the pecking order.

Meanwhile, Basadien is yet to fully get a feel of playing for the Brazilians as he has struggled to break into the first XI with six appearances this season, two of them starts.

Former Stellenbosch left-back Diego Brown thinks the duo risk missing out on the 2026 World Cup with Bafana Bafana unless they leave Sundowns in January.

“I think for Fawaaz and Jayden, it would be a no-brainer to take a loan move in the next window to get some game time under their belts. Both came from lots of playing time at Stellenbosch to limited playing time at Sundowns. They were key players (at Stellenbosch),” Brown told Soccer Laduma.

Brown has, however, defended the two players’ move to Sundowns following the criticism leveled against them that they joined the PSL giants for the money.

“It’s normal for them to have made a move to Sundowns because professional players are always dreaming and thinking about big moves,” he added.

“Why are you playing football if you don’t have big aspirations for yourself? But we also need to look at their current situation. We have the Africa Cup of Nations coming and then the World Cup next year.

“These are tournaments anyone would want to be part of. So, for the sake of their dreams and aspirations, I would suggest a loan move for them to get playing time. In my opinion, both of them need this opportunity to represent their country.”
