FIFA World Cup Qualifiers – Broos explains Basadien & Kwayiba snub

Bafana Bafana are set to play Lesotho and Nigeria in the next couple of days, hoping to seal their FIFA World Cup ticket.

South Africa are currently on 13 points from Group C, six more than Nigeria, who are fourth, and seven more than fifth-placed Lesotho. Six points from the two games might seal their place in the Global competition to be hosted jointly by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

The first assignment for Bafana Bafana will be on Friday, September 5, in Bloemfontein, with the one against the Super Eagles coming four days later at the same venue.

Coach Hugo Broos recently confirmed his final squad for the two games, but no place for Fawaaz Basadien, who recently joined Mamelodi Sundowns, and Orlando Pirates' new boy Sinoxolo Kwayiba impressed in the previous international assignments. The Belgian has since explained why he omitted the duo from his arsenal.

Broos explains Basadien and Kwayiba omissions

“Fawaaz, and his is for every player, look at Kwayiba at Pirates; when you change clubs, first of all you need to adapt to the club, there are different rules, different ways of playing, so everything is different than the club you come from.

“I think this is the little from of Fawaaz, he came, didn’t play so well, he was then out the team – [against Kaizer Chiefs] they took him out again a little but after half-time, I think it’s a question of confidence now. When I see Fawaaz now and the one from last year, there’s a difference and then you have to decide as a coach – not to take him and take a guy who plays always, like for example, Kabini – he plays all the games for Molde.

“So I know this one is ready and it’s a difficult choice because Fawaaz is always with us but yeah – it is what it is – and as a coach you have to take the decision there and imagine that Fawaaz is with us and he’s playing and then you will ask why not Kabini? These things can happen and I hope Fawaaz is fighting to win back his position in the team,” Broos concluded.
