AFCON 2025: Uganda forced to play ALL three goalkeepers in Nigeria loss

Published on by

Nigeria wrapped up the group stage at AFCON 2025 with a perfect record, beating 10-man Uganda 3-1 in Fes on Tuesday to finish top of Group C. Raphael Onyedika scored twice, while Paul Onuachu ended a four-year international goal drought with his first goal since 2021.

The Super Eagles, already assured of top spot, rested several regulars but still dominated. Onuachu opened the scoring in the 28th minute after Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s clever assist.

ALL THREE GOALKEEPERS

Uganda’s night descended into chaos as they became one of the rare teams to use three different goalkeepers in a single match. Veteran Denis Onyango went off injured at half-time, his replacement Salim Magoola was sent off in the 56th minute for handling outside his area, and third-choice Nafian Alionzi was forced to step in.

Nigeria capitalised immediately. Onyedika struck twice in five minutes (62’, 67’), both assisted by Samuel Chukwueze, to put the result beyond doubt. Rogers Mato netted a consolation in the 75th minute, lifting the ball over Francis Uzoho after Allan Okello’s through pass.

The win sealed Nigeria’s nine-point haul, with Tunisia finishing second and Tanzania progressing as one of the best third-placed teams. For Uganda, the goalkeeper turmoil summed up a chaotic campaign under coach Paul Put.
