Rob Moore, the agent of former Manchester United strikers coach Benni McCarthy, has provided an update regarding the search for a new job for his client.
McCarthy’s contract at United was not renewed as the club opted to appoint Ruud van Nistelrooy, who now serves as both assistant coach and strikers coach under Erik ten Hag.
McCarthy’s departure marked the end of his two-year tenure with the Premier League giants, which began in July 2022.
Speculation has arisen linking him to Mamelodi Sundowns, who have experienced a challenging start to the season after the changes within their coaching staff, including the exit of Rulani Mokwena and the subsequent appointment of Manqoba Mngqithi as the new head coach.
Speaking to Soccer Laduma, Moore has refuted claims of any communication with the Tshwane-based club.
He then revealed that they have had discussions with the USA MLS club which is interested in the services of the Bafana Bafana all-time top goal scorer.
BENNI MCCARTHY AGENT RESPONDS TO SUNDOWNS RUMOURS
“I can tell you categorically he was not in South Africa for a meeting with Sundowns,” Moore.
“I can tell you is that there are discussions with a club in the MLS. That is happening, and Benni is open to whatever project there is that shows ambition.
“So now you come back and look at what's relevant for the South African situation?
“Well, what's relevant for the South African situation is that if there is a project that has continental ambitions.
“So, if it's a club that has a chance of succeeding in winning the CAF Champions League, which also then in time can lead to this expanded [FIFA] Club World Cup format that's in place – that kind of a project would be interesting for Benni McCarthy.
“So it wouldn't be about coming back to a country in Africa that has good ambitions to win its league in its own country. It has to be bigger than that.
“It has to be the opportunity to go to one of the continent's power clubs and that club has gotta have the realistic ambitions to want to win the continent's biggest prize then. Then that is interesting for Benni.”
