Another Stellenbosch player forcing exit? Barker on why Pirates-linked star missed last 2 games

Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker has explained why Orlando Pirates-linked Ismaël Toure has not been playing in the past two games.

The 27-year-old defender was not part of Stellies’ two legs of the CAF Confederation Cup first preliminary round against Nsingizini Hotspurs that were both played at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Meanwhile, last week, reports also suggested that the Ivorian centre-back hasn’t been at training at times as he looks to leave the club soon.

As previously reported, Toure has been linked with Ezimnyama Ngenkani a couple of times.

Barker admitted that the lanky centre-back is looking to leave the club before the the transfer window closes. However, he conveyed his desire to make a move to Europe rather than domestically.

Considering the situation and the nature of the opponents [Nsingizini], Barker indicated that they opted to grant Toure a respite during the two encounters. He mentioned that an update regarding the defender's future would be available next week.

WHY ORLANDO PIRATES-TOURE HASN’T BEEN PLAYING FOR STELLENBOSCH LATELY

“Toure at this stage, it’s a difficult one, hopefully…European closes at the end of August. He’s got ambitions and that’s where he desperately wants to go,” said Barker.

“At this stage, nothing has materialised. So, if the window gets closed, obviously he has to get on with things.

“But for now, we felt it was the type of opposition and type of game that we didn’t need to add further stress to him at this stage.

“I’m sure by this time next week, we’ll have a clear indication of the way forward.”

Toure has been with Stellies since last year in July, signing from Marumo Gallants who had been relegated to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

He quickly established himself as a key player for the Cape Winelands side, garnering interest from Gauteng clubs.
