The South African forward will hope that the arrival of the new forward does not impact his game time

Rulani Mokwena’s Wydad Athletic Club have completed the signing of former AC Milan striker M’Biaye Niang in what is a major statement from the Moroccan giants.

Wydad have been on a signing spree since Mokwena took over in July and Niang is the latest to arrive in Morocco as they look to build a strong squad to challenge on multiple fronts.

Senegalese striker Niang is a highly traveled player who has played in Italy, France, England, Turkey and Saudi Arabia.

The Senegalese has played for over 10 clubs

The 29-year-old joins Wydad after his stint with Italian side Empoli where he scored six goals and provided one assist in 2023-24.

Niang played for AC Milan between 2012 and 2018, making 76 appearances while scoring 12 goals before loan stints at Montpellier, Genoa, Watford and Torino after which he joined French club Rennes.

He had a short stint in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ahli before he returned to France to join Bordeaux then Auxerre, after which he moved to Turkey to play for Adana Demirspor, who would loan him out to Empoli.

Will Niang’s arrival impact Cassius Mailula?

His arrival is, however, not good news for South African forward Cassius Mailula who will have to contend with stiff competition from him and Brazilian striker Pedrinho.

Mailula is among the new players who have joined Wydad and after ending his nightmare spell at MLS side Toronto FC, he will be hoping that the signing of Niang does not limit his game time.

Niang’ signing did not, however, inspire Wydad on Sunday as they were forced into a goalless draw with second division side Kawkab Athletique Club of Marrakech in the Excellence Cup.

Both sides, however, advanced to the next round of the competition, on four points each, with Mokwena now having won one, drawn another while losing one of his first three games.
