Bafana Bafana legend Benni McCarthy opens up on best player he has played with

South Africa legend Benni McCarthy played with many players for both the national team and the clubs he played for.

During his prime days, the Kenya coach represented Ajax, Celta Vigo, Porto, Blackburn Rovers, West Ham United, and Orlando Pirates. So far, he is the only one from the country to have won the UEFA Champions League when he was contracted to Porto in 2004.

While with the Portuguese outfit, the former striker shared the changing room with Danish legend Michael Laudrup from 1997 to 1999. McCarthy has since conceded that the midfielder was the best he has ever played with.

The things that he could do with a ball!

“I had the honour to play with Michael Laudrup when I was at Ajax, a young player coming through, and you see the professionalism. He was the first ever player to have made the switch from Real Madrid to Barcelona and then back to Real Madrid,” he told Pulse Sports.

“Never has anything like that even happened, and he was one of those players who made the switch between the two giants of world football.

“But just the things that he could do with a ball, the vision, the skills, and the intelligence.

“Oh wow, I’ve never seen when you were a 19-year-old kid and you play with somebody like that, like wow. If you don’t learn anything in life, then football is not for you. It’s not your sport. And yeah, I had the pleasure and honour to play with Michael Laudrup, and he was the greatest player I’ve played with,” McCarthy concluded.
