Latest news about Bafana Bafana, in the last 24 hours, including Egypt’s legend claiming Hugo Broos was scared of the game, mistakes committed by the Belgian and more.
The mistake committed by Broos
Former Bafana Bafana midfielder Kagisho Dikgacoi has explained the tactical mistake committed by Hugo Broos in South Africa’s 2-0 defeat against Mexico in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“I think we had a decent start; the first 10 minutes, we looked like we would settle into the game as soon as possible. But the tactical approach, especially offensively, wasn’t going to be suitable for the starting line-up we had,” Dikgacoi told FARPost.
“We made a lot of technical mistakes, especially in our half, but I think in terms of the effort, the boys really tried. In terms of the game plan, I think we were a bit lost in every department.

“Some of the players, I think, were misplaced. At the back, when you look at [Mbekezeli] Mbokazi, you play him as a lateral centre-back, and he’s more comfortable in the central position. Even [Nkosinathi] Sibisi playing him as a lateral centre-back, it was always going to give us problems, especially when we build from the back.”
Benni unhappy with Broos
Bafana Bafana legend Benni McCarthy did not hold back on his take after South Africa fell to a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Mexico in their 2026 FIFA World Cup opener.
“We already started off so negative with a defensive shape, and leaving two players up front. So, the two players are supposed to play against their back four, and the two midfielders that are incoming,” McCarthy told SportyTV.
“Because, like, right from the off, we had Lyle, who was in the opposition half, and Iqraam, and every other single player was in our own half. So, when were we going to get out of our half, you understand?
“I hope they go and they analyse this game properly, where it went wrong, and then we don’t deprive ourselves as a nation, having all our flair players not getting even an opportunity to play.

“You know, when the game is over and then you bring in players, that’s going to do absolutely nothing. So, I think he got it totally wrong.”
Egypt legend tears Broos
Former Egypt international Mohamed Aboutrika blamed Hugo Broos for South Africa’s disappointing defeat to co-hosts Mexico.
Aboutrika, 47, was critical of South Africa’s performance and put the blame on Hugo Broos’ 3-5-2 setup, according to Ghana Soccer Net.
“He’s afraid of the game. It’s the first match, so he’s scared. He went too defensive and right from the lineup, I knew he would lose. I blamed the coach. A disastrous match Aboutrika told beIN Sports.
“I am shocked as an African because this team deserves to play much better with the qualities they have. Mexico isn’t that special,” he concluded.
