Bafana Bafana to face COSAFA rivals in friendly match

Bafana Bafana have confirmed another friendly match in June which will come four days after they take on Tanzania.

Coach Hugo Broos named a provisional squad of 41 last week for the upcoming friendly matches in June but it was only revealed that Tanzania were the team they would face at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, Limpopo on Friday, June 6.

Now, COSAFA rivals Mozambique have been added to the list of opponents with the clash against the Mambas set to take place on June 10 at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria.

Broos will trim his squad to 23 this week with the team expected to report for camp in Johannesburg on Sunday, June 1 and then travel to Polokwane on the same day.

Why are the friendlies necessary?

Mamelodi Sundowns players were not selected as they will be participating in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup to be played in the United States from June 14-to July 13.

This is part of South Africa’s preparations for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers which will resume in September with Broos’ men enjoying a five-point lead at the top of Group C with four matches remaining.

Bafana Bafana, who have 13 points from six matches, will take on Lesotho away on September 1 before hosting Nigeria seven days later and then conclude their campaign with a trip to Zimbabwe and a home match against Rwanda in October when they hope to make a return to the World Cup since 2010.

South Africa and Mozambique have faced off nine times with Bafana Bafana winning five, two ending in draws, while the Mambas have two victories.
