Kaizer Chiefs step up chase for main target with increased offer

Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly upped their offer for Stellenbosch FC winger Langelihle Phili, proposing a new player-plus-cash deal that now includes a second player in addition to Ashley Du Preez.

The Glamour Boys are keen to land the junior international before the 2026/27 Premier Soccer League season kicks off, as head coach Fernando da Cruz continues to overhaul his squad during their pre-season tour in Spain.

While both clubs have remained silent on the matter, it is understood that negotiations are advancing. According to SABC, Chiefs are now looking to make their proposal more attractive to the Cape Winelands club.

Phili on Chiefs radar since January

Chiefs’ interest in Phili first emerged during the January transfer window, a period when the winger also received an offer from Libyan club Al-Ittihad Tripoli. At the time, Stellenbosch were unwilling to part with a key player mid-season, citing a lack of time to find a suitable replacement.

However, circumstances have shifted. With Phili now in the final year of his contract, Stellenbosch are reportedly more open to a sale to avoid losing him on a free transfer at the end of the upcoming season.

Du Preez agrees Stellies deal but…

It is reported that Du Preez has already agreed to personal terms for a return to Stellenbosch, with the move contingent on Phili heading to Naturena. To close the deal, Chiefs are now prepared to add another player and a transfer fee to the package.

The identity of the second player involved in the proposed swap remains undisclosed. It is also uncertain whether this revised offer will be enough to convince Stellenbosch to let go of one of their most valuable players.

Du Preez, who joined Chiefs from Stellies four years ago, appears set for a return to his former club, but the transfer hinges entirely on Phili making the switch to Naturena.
