Bafana ‘five years back’ after Pitso appointment? Mosimane responds to Broos

Pitso Mosimane was officially confirmed as the new Bafana Bafana coach on Tuesday morning in a presser staged at SAFA House.

The 62-year-old succeeded Hugo Broos, who had been at the helm of the South African men’s national team. The latter, however, was unhappy with the appointment of the former Mamelodi Sundowns tactician.

“You know, South Africa still doesn’t have a coach. The main candidate is Pitso Mosimane, a successful South African manager,” Broos told Belgian outlet Nieuwsblad.

“However, they know that if he comes in, it will be a step back five years in time. Club owners and agents will be calling the coach to influence team selection. I threw all of them out. If one called, I’d tell them flatly: ‘I don’t talk with agents.’”

However, Mosimane was not interested in responding to the veteran Belgian but lauded the 74-year-old for what he achieved during his time at the helm of Mzansi football.

“I will answer the questions related to my job, which is coaching,” he responded to the media.

“I think, way before I have recognised and praised Hugo Broos for what he’s done, I appreciate the work Broos has done, and everyone else has done.

“He has laid very good foundations for us; he has done exceptionally well. I’m not saying it only today; I’ve said it before. He has put a good foundation for me,” Mosimane concluded.

The main assignment for the new technical team will be to help Bafana Bafana qualify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations to be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
