Bafana defender’s European dream crushed after long-term injury

Chicago Fire and South Africa international Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s promising European move has been abruptly put on hold after a severe groin injury ended his Major League Soccer season.

The defender is set to undergo surgery in Finland, effectively shelving any potential transfer during the current window. Speaking exclusively to SABC Sport, Mbokazi’s agent, Basia Michaels of QT Sport, confirmed the unfortunate development.

“Any transfer for Mbokazi would require him to successfully complete a medical, and the current situation makes that impossible because of the severity of his injury,” Michaels stated. “Unfortunately, any plans to transfer the player will have to be put on hold.”

Significant setback for Chicago Fire

The 20-year-old’s stock had risen significantly following a series of standout performances for South Africa at the recent FIFA World Cup. His impressive displays attracted strong interest from several European clubs, particularly in Italy, making a move either now or in January seem increasingly probable.

However, Chicago Fire head coach Gregg Berhalter recently confirmed that the young star requires an operation for a thigh tear, sidelining him for the remainder of the 2026 campaign. Mbokazi has been a key figure for the Fire this season, appearing in 12 of their 18 matches.

Michaels elaborated on the next steps for the player’s recovery, confirming his trip to a specialist in Finland.

“We’ve been working over the past week to determine the best course of action for his recovery,” she said.

“He will now head to Finland to work with a specialist and have the operation. There remains interest in his services, but at the moment that’s something we simply cannot explore because of the current setback.”

The injury is also a major blow to Bafana Bafana. Mbokazi is now expected to be unavailable for the opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in September, October, and November, creating a significant challenge for the incoming head coach as the team begins its campaign to qualify for the tournament co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
