Mabasa on missed target, ‘it wasn’t meant to be’

Tshegofatso Mabasa has reflected on falling short of Orlando Pirates’ all-time goalscoring record, finishing his spell at the club eight goals shy of Benedict “Tso” Vilakazi’s long-standing mark of 58.

“As close as I was, at the end of the day, I can plan but God decides, I guess it wasn’t meant to be, he has always had bigger and better plans for me – and I guess I am walking into that period of my life,” Mabasa told iDiski Times.

“What happened at Pirates I’m grateful for the opportunity obviously and what I managed to achieve at the club, I will always wish them well and I will always be watching and supporting the guys.

"At the end of the day, I can plan but God decides, I guess it wasn't meant to be, he has always had bigger and better plans for me."

“Spending so long there, it wasn’t easy at all and you tend to grow bonds in environments when you have been there for a long time, and that’s what happened with me – so I’m truly grateful to every part they played in my career and I believe in this next step step. Mas Fes it is, I have a job to do here and it’s what I will focus on. I was not hurt by it [not breaking the record].”

Mamelodi Sundowns defender Aubrey Modiba says the team is determined to reclaim the Betway Premiership title after missing out on a record-extending ninth consecutive league crown last season.

Modiba said that while winning the CAF Champions League – the biggest prize in African club football – was a major achievement, losing the league title was difficult to accept because many of the players are not accustomed to that feeling.

"The feeling was not nice losing the league cause some of us have never experienced that."

He added that the team will do everything possible to earn the gold badge again, saying they cannot wait to begin their league campaign – a marathon they know very well how to navigate.

We want to win the league again. “The feeling was not nice losing the league cause some of us have never experienced that.

“We want to go back of winning the league every season because you win it, you go back to the Champions League. And we always want to do well in the Champions League, get our gold badge back. 

“But congratulations to Pirates, they deserve it and we go again this season, another marathon that we know very well how to run, let the games begin.”
