Bafana Bafana legends Quinton Fortune and Benni McCarthy have reiterated their desire to see Relebohile Mofokeng seal a move abroad as soon as possible.
The two former players were left in awe of the Orlando Pirates star’s performance for South Africa against South Korea at the 2026 World Cup when Hugo Broos’ men sealed a place in the knockout round following a 1-0 win.
Mofokeng was one of the outstanding players as he ran the show, creating opportunities for his teammates, while causing the Koreans plenty of problems with his movement.

So impressed is Fortune that he feels the 21-year-old is ‘wasting’ his immense talents by being stuck in the Premier Soccer League (PSL).
Bafana legend on why Rele has to leave
“He needs to leave South Africa,” Fortune said on Sporty TV when analysing Bafana’s game against South Korea.
“This talent is a waste. I want that talent to go to the next level. To come in at this level against one of the best teams in the group and put in that performance, oh my goodness!”

“I am sorry to be the bad person here, but he has to be competing against the best.”
McCarthy also weighs in, giving reasons why he supports Fortune’s sentiments that Mofokeng is now too big for the PSL.
“Not being the bad person, just being the reality,” said the Bafana all-time top scorer.
McCarthy wants Mofokeng in Europe soon
“Honestly, we need to understand he’s got the capabilities to mix it up against the best in the world and if he can go to that next level, you just know what that means for Bafana and South African football.”

“It is not that we feel bad, our league is incredible, but when we produce, we have to let the talents come to Europe and play against the best because then they can elevate themselves to the next level of [Kylian] Mbappe, Desire Doue, [Ousmane] Dembeles that is what we want.”
Mofokeng has been linked with moves abroad in the last two years but a deal is yet to materialise and the calls continue to get louder.
It remains to be seen what the future holds for the talented Pirates forward after the World Cup.
