Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has opened up over why he opted to start Relebohile Mofokeng against South Korea at the 2026 World Cup.
Mofokeng was among the three changes made to the starting XI by Broos as he got the nod after bench roles against Mexico and Czech Republic.
The Orlando Pirates star had a good game as he troubled South Korea with his movement in and around the box while his link-up play and deft touches were a joy to watch.

Broos justifies selection of Pirates star
He was denied an assist when Thapelo Maseko missed one of his key chances while he also attempted shots from distance and Broos says he felt this was the right game to unleash the 21-year-old.
“You have to wait until the right moment for a young player like him,” Broos told Sporty TV. “He is a talented player but if I had to listen to all those people in South Africa, then it should not have worked.”
Broos says Mofokeng had already displayed in training that he was ready for the historic match and he had no doubt that he would thrive against the South Koreans.
Why Bafana coach trusted Mofokeng
“It was the right moment and I felt also when I saw Rele’s training he had confidence and you do not have to hesitate to put him in such an important game like today and like his other teammates, he had a good game,” he added.
Bafana Bafana made World Cup history when Maseko’s 63rd minute goal settled the contest as they went on to finish second in Group A and qualify for the Round of 32 where they will play co-hosts Mexico.
